“Connecting ‘Things’ and ‘Care’: Building Patient-Centered Smart New Services”

Founded in 1958, the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University is a Grade III Class A general hospital integrating medical services, teaching, scientific research, and prevention. Recently, the hospital’s information department team won the Excellence Award at the 4th “Vertiv Cup” Smart Healthcare Innovation Competition for its project “Connecting ‘Things’ and ‘Care’: Building Patient-Centered Smart New Services,” themed on the Lachesis Smart Ward. In the project presentation, the hospital first shared the origin and pain points of the project, described how Lachesis products helped the hospital solve difficulties and pain points during their application in the ward, and summarized the project’s overall innovations as well as the significance of its promotion and popularization.
The project “Connecting ‘Things’ and ‘Care’: Building Patient-Centered Smart New Services” uses technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, smart devices, and AI-based intelligent analysis to enable data interconnection among medical staff, patients, and smart devices. On this data foundation, it innovatively creates patient-centered smart new services.
1、Delivering bedside services and achieving high-quality nursing
Nurses use handheld mobile terminals (PDAs) and mobile nursing workstations to quickly complete “three checks and seven verifications,” vital sign entry, documentation, and other tasks at the bedside. This effectively ensures medical quality and safety, improves nursing efficiency, reduces the frequency of nurses traveling back and forth to the nurse station, and returns nurses to patients.
The bedside interaction system connects the nurse station, wards, corridors, bathrooms, and other areas, allowing patients and their families to call nurses at any time and enabling nurses to respond promptly and meet the needs of care recipients. This effectively enhances communication timeliness among doctors, nurses, and patients, and helps build a good doctor-patient relationship.
2、Continuous monitoring of patient vital signs to ensure patient safety at all times
The vital signs collection system uses an all-in-one vital signs collection device to intelligently and quickly collect multiple types of vital sign data. The system can also transcribe the data into nursing documentation with one click and automatically upload them via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The contactless vital signs monitoring system provides 24-hour real-time continuous monitoring of respiration, heart rate, bed leaving, body movement, and other conditions for critically ill patients. If a patient becomes abnormal, an automatic alarm is triggered so that medical staff can intervene in time and ensure patient safety during hospitalization.
3、Full closed-loop infusion management, bringing peace of mind to nurses and reassurance to patients
The full closed-loop intelligent infusion management system can remotely monitor patients’ infusion status in real time. Nurses can dynamically manage infusions based on real-time conditions, promptly preparing medication, changing bottles, and removing needles for patients. When the remaining infusion volume falls below a certain value or the drip rate is abnormal, nurses can receive alarm alerts anytime and anywhere.
4、Precise management of ward medications to ensure patient medication safety
The ward intelligent medication management system enables refined management of ward stock medications by individual unit, expiration date, and batch number, moving from cumbersome manual management processes into an era of information-based intelligent management.
After its implementation at the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University, the Smart Ward project has been widely praised. Other hospitals in the Ganzhou area and leaders of the Ganzhou Municipal Party Committee have visited the hospital many times for inspection and observation. In the future, Lachesis will continue to cooperate with the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University to develop more and better products for clinical use.
